E-filed tax returns with direct deposit: E-file with direct deposit is the fastest way to get your federal tax refund. Typically, the IRS expects to issue most tax refunds within 21 days after acceptance if there are no issues. Mailed paper returns: Avoiding a paper return is more important than ever to avoid refund delays, if possible. The IRS cautions if you need your refund quickly do not file on paper. Usually, the IRS says to allow 4 weeks before checking the status of your refund, and that refund processing can take 6 to 8 weeks from the date the IRS receives your return. Tax Refund Processing Start checking status 24 – 48 hours after e-file: Once you have e-filed your tax return, you can check your status using the IRS Where’s My Refund? tool. You will need your Social security number or ITIN, your filing status, and your exact refund amount. Return Received Notice within 24 – 48 hours after e-file: The IRS Where’s My Refund? tool will show “Return Received” status once they begin processing your tax return. You will need the following information when checking refund status: Social security number or ITIN, your filing status, and your exact federal tax refund amount shown on the tax return. You will not see a tax refund date until the IRS finishes processing your tax return and approves your tax refund. Status change from “Return Received” to “Refund Approved”: Once the IRS finishes processing your tax return and confirms your tax refund is approved, your status will change from “Return Received” to “Refund Approved.” The change in status can take a few days, and a tax refund date will not be provided in Where’s My Refund? until your tax return is processed and your tax refund is approved. Where’s My Refund? tool shows refund date: The IRS will provide a personalized refund date once your status moves to “Refund Approved.” Where’s My Refund? shows “Refund Sent”: If the status in Where’s My Refund? shows “Refund Sent,” the IRS has sent your tax refund to your financial institution for direct deposit. It can take 1 to 5 days for your financial institution to deposit funds into your account. If you opted to receive your tax refund via mail, it could take several weeks for your check to arrive. Track your refund in TurboTax You could experience delays in receiving your tax refund if your return: Includes errors – The IRS has indicated that your refund could be delayed if the information you provided on your tax return does not match the IRS records. Is incomplete – If you didn’t have all of your documents and filed an inaccurate return Needs further review in general Is affected by identity theft or fraud Includes Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit – Under the Path Act, the IRS cannot issue a refund that includes the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation PDF, which could take up to 14 weeks to process Tax Refund Status FAQ Will I see a date right away when I check the status in “Where’s My Refund”? The IRS Where’s My Refund? tool will not give you a date until your tax return is received, and processed, and your tax refund is approved by the IRS. It’s been longer than 21 days since the IRS has received my tax return, and I have not received my tax refund. What’s happening? Some tax returns take longer than others to process depending on your tax situation. Some of the reasons it may take longer include incomplete information, an error, or the IRS may need to review it further. I requested my money be automatically deposited into my bank account, but I was mailed a check. What happened? The IRS is limiting the number of direct deposits that go into a single bank account or prepaid debit card to three tax refunds per year. Your limit may have been exceeded. In addition, for a small number of returns, the IRS decides there may be indications that the bank account on the return is suspicious and they may decide to issue a check instead. How to Check Your Refund Status” « Older Comments Newer Comments » I’ve been checking my refund status pretty religiously for past 4 1/2 months on the “Where’s My Refund” page. For the longest time, it just kept saying they had received my return and it was being processed. Now suddenly I go to check it this morning and it says: “We cannot provide any information about your refund. Be sure to: •verify your filing date; •check with your tax preparer or tax software provider; or •verify you received your electronically filed acknowledgement e-mail. If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. However, processing may take longer under certain circumstances.” I know the info I put was correct because I’ve been putting the exact same stuff in over a hundred times. Is the system just down or is something else going on? Got a letter in either late March or early April requesting me to verify my identity to make sure it was actually me doing the return. Got another letter in May saying they were still processing it. Here we are in June, nearly 120 days since I filed and still getting the same message on the refund status. I think all of us who are being made to wait this long should have some sort of interest added on to our refund or some kind of credit added for next year’s return. Reply Its been 5 months still nothing, I never waited this long with little to no info it still says its processing first I had to wait 9 weeks to verify identity then 60 days for review now they say they’re sending out a letter its going to take 30days. Really? It take 30days to send a letter Reply I filed my return with Turbo Tax on/about 28 March and received Fed, but I have not yet received State of AL. what do I have to do in order to receive state of AL? Please stay on them as I’m just getting paid a return from 2 years ago. They may have your return under review for 60 days at a time. I also mailed previous year return in February of 2018 and if I didn’t call to check on they stated it was received as of June 2018. I received notices in the mail pushing it out until February of 2019. At that point I had to get a tax advocate on my case to see what’s the hold up. Needless to say it’s may of 2019 and I’m just now getting my case rectified and my refund sent out. Reply So it’s not best to check the WMR online? Just call? I wanna know when I’m getting that money and why it’s just sitting there Reply Hi Ashlee, Now that you have completed the 1040x Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, print, sign, and mail it. Amended returns are not available for e-filing. It takes about 8-12 weeks for the IRS to process it after they have received the amended tax return. Approximately, three weeks after your amendment is accepted, you can start tracking its status at the IRS Where’s My Amended Return? Also, please be aware that it can take 12-16 weeks to process your amendment and any refund that you may be expecting. Refunds are not available for Direct Deposit and will be mailed to the address submitted on the tax return. Thank you Reply How are refunds not available direct deposit and I received a TurboTax card?🤔 Reply Hello Keyonis, Your refund will not already be on your card. Cards are not active when mailed. You have to activate it then wait until the IRS issues your refund. TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. Once your return has been accepted by the IRS, then you can track the status of your refund. The IRS issues all tax refunds. TurboTax does not issue the actual refund. If you have an IRS acknowledgement then they are processing the return. You may also check the status of the tax refund via IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool. It is clear to me all of our status’ says the same things and we want/need answers. So if anyone anywhere has something for advice please send it. Appreciated . I do not know how to track the satus. Reply Still waiting, filed feb. 14. Yet nothing. Please let me know what’s going on. Reply I’m kind of relieve to know that there’s a lot of people who seem to be waiting for their federal refund longer than 21 days. My e-file was accepted on March 3rd and I got my CA state refund in a week or so but I still haven’t got my federal back. The IRS refund status says “Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.” I will give it another week or so and maybe try calling them… Reply I received the same info on my account also Finally 6 weeks after my refund had been ccwoted I received a letter by mail from the irs stating that I had to verify my identity. It took about a week and multiple phone calls to get my identity verified only to b told that now it going to be another 9 weeks before I can receive my refund, I believe the date is May 31. I filed my taxes on February 8th. And how it was explained to me was “ because I had to go through the process of verifying my identity that my refund is now no longer considered an e-filed return it is now considered a paper return so I have to wait the additional 9 weeks from the time that got everything verified before I will get my return. I filed early because I have a son graduating this year and I’m a single mom of two teenage boys. Paying for all his stuff this year has been hard enough and I planned ahead and filed early to make sure I could get my return back in time to finish paying for the last of his graduation supplies, prom etc… only to now b told that I want even get my return back until two weeks after he graduates. It’s makibg things very difficult financially right now. And keep in mind when ask why they were having to verify my identity no one could answer me, no one knows why. I didn’t mess up on my tax return nothing was changed on my return when they finished asking me a bunch of questions, so it’s through no fault of mine but yet I’m the one who is having to put what to do now. And at this point there is nothing else to do because I’m all out of resources right now. They have all been exhausted already. So sorry to vent, hope u have better luck than I did Reply You’re able to call the irs and request a tax advocate. Tell them you’re in a financial hardship. The advocate can see exactly what’s going on. They will help process your return faster. I filed both 2017 and 2018 together. A letter can back saying I need to verify my identity. I had to answer some questions over the phone. U thought I was cleared! Nope! Got another letter saying the irs wants to verify my employment. They asked for a company letterhead and a statement. The advocate faxed this to the irs department that handles this. Now, my check is finally on the way. I waited over three months. I suggest anyone that can’t check their status to ask for an advocate ASAP! Or else you’ll be waiting longer Crystal, What number did you call to request an IRS advocate? When will i receive the email from the IRS I did my taxes March 8th Reply Since no one ever replies back with an update, I will let you know how it went when I filed my taxes for a refund. I filed a basic return; no kids and not married. I filed on 3-11-19 and was accepted on 3-14-19. I was approved on 3-24-19 and got a direct deposit date for 3-27-19. Today, the 27th, I got the direct deposit. It took a total of 16 days from when I was accepted to when I got my refund. This might not be the case with everyone, but mine came relatively quickly in terms of the IRS. When I got my refund wasn’t a big deal for me, I wasn’t depending on the money for anything. Many years ago that wasn’t the case so I know how important it is because some of you are counting/depending on the money. I hope my case with regards to how quickly I got my refund helps some of you at ease. Reply What bank do. U have Reply I had a direct deposit date 3 27 19 also never received nothing I had a offset which they took their portion but what happen to the rest of my refund they said it was sent to the bank and I called my bank and they haven’t receive nothing yet with a offset it should only take a few additional day keep in my it says refund sent on the 27 at 10pm I got the refund went now how much longer I’m sick of this Reply My federal return was accepted 2/15/19 opted for direct deposit and still nothing??? It still says processing.. it’s been over a month. It’s ridiculous. Reply We have an amended tax return for 2017, it was filed in December of 2018; as of March 25th we have not heard a word from the IRS. The Turbo-Tax reference# is 432801273, can you get any information? Reply Hi Gordon, Amended returns have longer processing times than current year tax returns. Approximately, three weeks after your amendment is accepted, you can start tracking its status at the IRS http://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1 Also, please be aware that it can take 12-16 weeks to process your amendment and any refund that you may be expecting. I checked on my refund, as your email told me to do, and it says my return was rejected. I paid you $40, what is going on? Reply Hello Warren, If you received a “Reject” notice, then the return has to be resubmitted after clearing the reject issue. I’ve been checking my refund status pretty religiously for past 4 1/2 months on the “Where’s My Refund” page. Reply
Hello Randall, Per the IRS; a phone representative can research the status of your refund if it’s been 21 days or more since you filed electronically or, more than 6 weeks since you mailed your paper return or if the Where’s My Refund? tool directs you to contact them. Here is more information on how to call the IRS for Refund Status: Individuals 800-829-1040 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time Have the following ready when you call: Individuals • Social Security numbers (SSN) and birth dates • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for taxpayers without a Social Security number • Filing status – single, head of household, married filing joint, or married filing separate • Prior-year tax return • Tax return you’re calling about • Most recent correspondence sent to you (if any) Thank you Reply

Hi DeDe, TurboTax does not issue or track refunds. If the State return has been accepted, then go to the Massachusetts website using the link below. You can check the status either online or by phone. https://www.mass.gov/how-to/check-the-status-of-your-tax-refund If you are still unable to track the status of your MA state refund, then contact someone at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue directly, and see if they are able to access your information. Filed my taxes through my CPA around February 10th. Reply
Its been 5 months still nothing, I never waited this long with little to no info it still says its processing first I had to wait 9 weeks to verify identity then 60 days for review now they say they’re sending out a letter its going to take 30days. Really? It take 30days to send a letter Reply
I filed my return with Turbo Tax on/about 28 March and received Fed, but I have not yet received State of AL. what do I have to do in order to receive state of AL? Reply
Hi Buddie, For refund-related questions, contact the Alabama Department of Revenue. Statement from Alabama Department of Revenue: For the most up-to-date information concerning the status of your current year refund, call 1-855-894-7391 or check the website at https://revenue.alabama.gov, then click on “Where’s my refund?”. Return processing times vary depending on many factors, including complexity of the return and identity verification processes. Please allow 8-12 weeks to receive your refund. Thank you Reply
Mine return said accepted then got a letter to come in to prove my identity. Been 6 weeks still says no info available Reply
Hi Debbie, If you received a verification request from the IRS please follow the instructions on the letter to expedite the processing of your refund. The IRS offers only two ways to verify your identity: Online at the IRS Identity Verification Service website By phone at the toll-free number listed on your 5071C Letter Only those who receive a 5071C Letter should use the verification system. The letters are sent to you via U.S. mail. They are never emailed, and the IRS does not initiate verification requests by phone. Anybody that has filed a paper return and what an update would need to call the 1-800 number to get any status update! Reply

same! I filed electronically on Feb 28th and the status still shows its “being processed”. I’ve received nothing in the mail from IRS and all I get is their automated system when I call. Not sure what to do at this point.. Reply
I filed my taxes about a month and half ago and the next day I recieved the rest of my w2 forms so when I went to add it, they told me I had to amend it to add the rest, I had to wait a couple weeks to finally amend it and I finally added it and I received the first part of my refund a couple weeks ago but the rest is just sitting in the tool bar. I wanna know when I’m getting that money and why it’s just sitting there Reply
Hi Ashlee, Now that you have completed the 1040x Amended U.S. Thank you Reply
Hello Keyonis, Your refund will not already be on your card. Has anyone anywhere recieved any type of help from TurboTax or even the IRS? I recieved my tiny state refund but not my federal!! I filed the end of March and my status bar has been on approved the entire time. In fact the exact same day I E-Filed it has been on APPROVED. If I have recieved my state and not federal, why isn’t this shown as STATE TAX RETURNED instead of showing nothing but a status bar for what is missing and partially recieved!!! It is clear to me all of our status’ says the same things and we want/need answers. So if anyone anywhere has something for advice please send it. Appreciated . Reply

My refund filed Feb. 18th and signed up for direct deposit. I still have NOT received a refund. I IRS refund status website is worthless. You receive a message refund still being processed. I want more information. And there is no phone number where you can call an actual person for assistance. I am seeing other comments on refunds not received. I would like to know what is going on especially when one comment states they filed 3/11/19, accepted 3/14/19, approved 3/24/19 and refund 3/27/19. Please someone give me an explanation where is my refund? Reply
I did my taxes for 2018 on February 22, 2019. I still do not have my refund. I get on the IRS2Go app and I go to the IRS site and punch in the information. Always tells me there is no information. I did it on Turbo Tax and mailed on February 23, 2019. On April 6, 2019 will be 6 weeks. What should I do then? Is there a certain number to call? Thank You Cheryl Reply

I’m kind of relieve to know that there’s a lot of people who seem to be waiting for their federal refund longer than 21 days. My e-file was accepted on March 3rd and I got my CA state refund in a week or so but I still haven’t got my federal back. The IRS refund status says “Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.” I will give it another week or so and maybe try calling them… Reply
I received the same info on my account also Finally 6 weeks after my refund had been ccwoted I received a letter by mail from the irs stating that I had to verify my identity. So sorry to vent, hope u have better luck than I did Reply
You’re able to call the irs and request a tax advocate. Or else you’ll be waiting longer
Since no one ever replies back with an update, I will let you know how it went when I filed my taxes for a refund. Reply
I had a direct deposit date 3 27 19 also never received nothing I had a offset which they took their portion but what happen to the rest of my refund they said it was sent to the bank and I called my bank and they haven’t receive nothing yet with a offset it should only take a few additional day keep in my it says refund sent on the 27 at 10pm I got the refund went now how much longer I’m sick of this Reply
My state says my refund was sent March 21, I got my card today, March 25, and there is no money on it when I activated it..any idea why? Reply

Hi Gordon, Amended returns have longer processing times than current year tax returns. Refunds are not available for Direct Deposit and will be mailed to the address submitted on the tax return. Hope this helped. Thanks Reply
