Be aware of your both your home and home office size, as your home office deduction is based on the portion of your home you use for business.
- Record deductions for both direct expenses (like an exclusive business line or repairing the office) and indirect expenses (like those mentioned in tip #3 along with homeowners association fees and security system) that you incur each year.
- You can also take advantage of the newer simplified home office deduction up to $1,500, which is the set dollar amount of $5 per square foot of your home used for your business up to 300 square feet. As I mentioned in the second tip, you will still have to make sure your space qualifies.
